About Ph.D. students
At OIST, graduate students pursuing Ph.D. degrees are not directly admitted to individual units. All graduate students must first be admitted to the OIST graduate program through the standard process. The admitted students are then assigned three rotations in different units during the first year, after which they find a unit to continue with thesis research. Therefore, the student should be aware that they may or may not be able to join the unit of their choice well into the first year at OIST. Generally speaking, it is desirable that the student has multiple units of interest rather than being focused on joining a single unit.
